How to Make Your Makeup Last All Night: An Edmonton Makeup Artist’s Guide to Fall Events

Your makeup can look flawless at 8pm. The question is whether it still looks flawless at midnight. For fall events in Edmonton — galas, holiday parties, wedding receptions, birthday dinners — wear time is real, and the difference between a look that holds and one that slides comes down almost entirely to preparation and products.

“The clients who come in asking for long-wear makeup aren’t asking for a different look. They’re asking for the same look, six hours later. That requires a system, not just a setting spray.”

If you’ve ever watched a carefully applied look fade within a few hours — foundation creasing into fine lines, eyeshadow disappearing into the crease, lipstick fading to a ghost — you already know that longevity is its own category of makeup skill. It isn’t about applying more product. It’s about applying the right products in the right order, onto the right base, and finishing with the right setting technique. Edmonton’s fall season runs dry and cold, which actually makes some things easier (lower humidity helps powder set more firmly) and others harder (dry skin needs careful prep or foundation will emphasise texture rather than smooth it). Here is the complete system Joanna uses with her clients before every long-wear event booking.

Why Makeup Fades and How to Stop It

Makeup breaks down for a few consistent reasons. Skin produces oil throughout the day, which lifts foundation and eyeshadow from below. The natural moisture in skin migrates upward and disrupts the powder layer. Environmental factors like heat, humidity, and physical contact (touching your face, eating, drinking) wear away the outer layer of product. A longevity system addresses all of these at every stage, from before foundation goes on to the final seal over the finished look.

The most important insight is that primer, setting powder, and setting spray each do different jobs — they are not interchangeable, and using only one or two of them leaves gaps in the system. The base prep controls what the foundation adheres to. Setting powder controls moisture migration and oil. Setting spray locks the powder layer and restores a skin-like finish rather than a flat powdered one. All three are necessary for genuine all-night wear.

The Longevity System Step by Step

Step 01 — Skin Prep: The Foundation of Everything

Long-wear makeup starts before any product touches skin. If skin is dry, foundation will cling to texture and flake off in patches within a few hours. If skin is already oily or freshly moisturised without enough absorption time, primer won’t grip properly and the whole system will lift. The ideal prep sequence for a fall event is a gentle cleanse, a hydrating toner or essence if skin is dry, a lightweight non-comedogenic moisturiser, and then a full 10 to 15 minutes of absorption time before primer. Rushing the skincare step is the single most common reason long-wear makeup fails.

Joanna’s tip: If you’re doing your own makeup for an event, build in more time than you think you need between skincare and primer. Blot lightly with a tissue before priming to remove any surface moisture that hasn’t fully absorbed, especially around the nose and chin. Primer applied over freshly moisturised, still-slightly-tacky skin will not grip the same way as primer applied over fully absorbed, settled skin.

Step 02 — Primer: Grip for Foundation, Control for Oil

Primer is not just a smoothing step — it creates a different surface for foundation to adhere to than bare skin. A good primer effectively doubles foundation’s staying power by giving it a base that is specifically designed for adherence rather than skin’s natural surface, which is variable, oily, and textured. For oily or combination skin, a silicone-based or mattifying primer controls breakthrough oil for significantly longer than setting powder alone. For dry skin, a hydrating primer prevents foundation from clinging to dry patches and creates a smoother, more flexible base that moves with the face rather than cracking.

Joanna’s tip: Apply primer with fingertips rather than a brush, and press it into the skin rather than sweeping it on. Pressing creates more contact between the primer and the skin’s surface, which improves grip. Pay particular attention to the T-zone even for dry skin types — this area almost always produces more oil than the rest of the face and will cause the most breakdown if under-primed.

Step 03 — Foundation: Choose Long-Wear Formulas

Not all foundations are formulated for wear time. A natural-finish, skin-like foundation may look beautiful in the first two hours and significantly less so by hour five. For events with a long wear requirement, a transfer-resistant, buildable-coverage formula explicitly marketed for long wear will almost always outperform a lighter, more natural option. The finish matters less than the formula — a long-wear foundation can be made to look more dewy or more matte depending on setting technique, but a short-wear formula cannot be made to last.

Joanna’s tip: Apply long-wear foundation with a damp sponge rather than a brush for a finish that looks more skin-like and less obviously long-wear. Bounce the product into the skin rather than dragging it, which builds coverage without adding heavy texture. Set immediately after application on areas that tend to break down first — the nose, chin, and inner corners of the eye — before finishing the full face.

Step 04 — Setting Powder: Lock, Bake, or Press

Setting powder controls moisture and oil migration through the foundation layer. The technique matters as much as the product. A light dusting of setting powder over the full face provides basic moisture control. Baking — applying a heavier layer of translucent powder under the eyes and over the T-zone and leaving it for 5 to 10 minutes before brushing away — creates a more locked finish in high-movement areas. Pressing powder firmly into the skin with a puff rather than dusting it on creates the strongest grip and is the technique professional makeup artists use before events where maximum wear time is needed.

Joanna’s tip: For events that run four hours or longer, use the pressing technique under the eyes and on the forehead rather than just dusting. The difference in wear time is significant, and it doesn’t add heaviness to the overall look — the effect is invisible once brushed but the longevity is not.

Step 05 — Setting Spray: Seal and Revive

A setting spray over the completed look does two things simultaneously: it melts the powder layers together so the finish reads as skin rather than powder, and it adds an additional film-forming layer over the entire look that significantly extends wear time. A good setting spray can add two to three additional hours of wear to a properly prepared base. For the longest hold, hold the spray 20 to 30 centimetres from the face and mist in an X and T motion to ensure full coverage. Allow it to dry completely without touching the face or blotting.

Joanna’s tip: Pack a small setting spray in your bag for the event itself. A mid-evening refresh spray — one or two light mists over the face after touching up powder — can revive a look that has been worn for several hours and significantly extends its life through the rest of the night. This is one of the most underused longevity techniques and one of the most effective.
